Please make sure that your pet is wearing a collar with ID tag whilst traveling. Details on the tag should include your pets name, and contact telephone number. If your pet arrives without ID, Canterbury Quarantine Services will supply a collar and tag. A small charge will be made for this.

Dental Care
Please ask your vet to check your pets teeth and gums at the first veterinary check up. If the teeth need scaling or there is any signs of gingivitis then please have this treated prior to your pets arrival.

Release from facility
A MAF officer will give written approval for your pet to be released on completion of the quarantine period. Under no circumstances will any pet be allowed to leave the premises without written authorization from MAF.

Onward Travel
Canterbury Quarantine Services Ltd is a member of IPATA International Inc. (Independent Pet and Animal Transportation Association). We will be happy to assist with onward shipment of your pet either nationally or internationally. Quotations available on request.

Can I touch my pet when I visit?   TOP
YES: You will be taken into your pets kennel or cattery unit for the visiting period. You are welcome to play with or groom your pet or just bring in a newspaper or book and relax.

We won’t be able to visit will this be a problem?   TOP
No, we can stay in regular touch by telephone and e-mail to keep you informed of your pets progress. We will make sure that your pet gets lots of extra special care. We only have a small number of staff so we really get to know your pet well during his / her stay. We will let you know if there are any problems at all.

What can I bring in for my pet?   TOP
Bedding or toys. Whilst we do provide these you may wish to bring in or post something familiar for your pet, maybe a t-shirt or towel with your scent on it. Basically you can bring in anything that we are able to wash before your pets departure from our facility. All these items will be returned to you. Food and edible treats: Again we do provide these but you are welcome to bring in favourites. You can either bring them in when you visit or leave them for us to label and give as you require.

What will my pet be fed during her stay?   TOP
We stock a wide selection of foods. We have the entire Eukanuba and Iams quality dried range of pet foods and also a selection of tinned meats and dog rolls. We can supply chicken, mince etc but an extra charge will be made for this. You are welcome to provide food if you wish.

How will my pet cope?   TOP
In our experience owners always expect the worst. Most pets are scared when they first arrive but usually settle down quickly. We make sure all new arrivals get lots of attention and cuddles.

We live in Wellington / Queenstown are you our nearest facility?   TOP
We are the only facility in the South Island. We are happy to make travel arrangements at the end of quarantine to any airport in New Zealand. We can also arrange flights to other countries if required.

We come from a hot country, Will my pet be cold?   TOP
No, we have under-floor heating and extra heat lamps if required. Your pet has access to indoor and outdoor areas so they can choose the temperature that suits them best.

What if my pet is ill during the quarantine period?   TOP
Our MAF vet will visit your pet on arrival and weekly during the quarantine period. He will monitor their health and wellbeing. All our staff members are veterinary nurses and we are able to provide 24 hour nurse care. If your pet or pets show any sign of illness our local vet is just ten minutes away. We have a veterinary room and are able to cope with all eventualities.

My dog / cat is a breeding bitch / Queen and will be pregnant on arrival is this a problem?   TOP
No, we can provide full care and attention for pregnant and whelping bitches or Queens. Pets must not travel if they are more than 42 days pregnant.

My pet is elderly / Diabetic / Incontinent can you cope with this?   TOP
Yes, we can cope with any special needs that your pet may have. Please let us know at the time of booking and provide as much information as possible to assist us with the care of your pet. If your pet is on medication please let us know at the time of booking as not all drugs are available or licensed for use in New Zealand. We may have to find alternatives or request permission from MAF to import these drugs.

How much will quarantine cost?   TOP
Please contact us for a current price list.

What happens if my pet stays over Christmas or Easter?   TOP
It is business as usual at Canterbury Quarantine Services. Our facility has staff every day of the year, however we are not open for visiting on public holidays.
